Overview
- Veridian Global: Our top pick for teams based only in South Africa, with a Cape Town team and a fee of 10% of salary that drops with volume.
- Remote: The strongest global platform for South Africa, as it owns its own local entity and keeps support in-house.
- Deel: The broadest all-in-one platform, best when South Africa is one of many hiring countries.
- Playroll: The lowest flat fee of the global platforms, with offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
- Multiplier: A capable global option that rewards annual contracts and adds visa support.
If you’re hiring only in South Africa, a local specialist charging a percentage of salary will usually cost far less than a global platform’s flat dollar fee. If South Africa is one of several countries, a global platform earns its higher price. The numbers behind that are below.
What is an EOR in South Africa?
An Employer of Record (EOR) is a company that legally employs staff in South Africa on your behalf, so you can hire without registering a local entity. It issues the employment contract, runs payroll and files PAYE, UIF and SDL with SARS. You still manage the person’s day-to-day work.
The EOR also carries compliance with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) and the Labour Relations Act (LRA), which cover leave, notice periods and fair dismissal.
For full-time roles, it’s the compliant alternative to paying South Africans as contractors. If a contractor works like an employee, they can be treated as one, with backdated tax and labour claims to follow. Contracting still makes sense for genuinely project-based work, and our guide to freelancing in South Africa covers the freelancer’s side.
How we ranked them
We ranked the five providers for a business hiring in South Africa specifically, so cost and local presence carry the most weight. Each provider was scored on four points:
- Monthly cost on a typical South African salary, using each provider’s published starting price.
- Local presence: whether the provider has its own people and entity in South Africa.
- Terms: flat fee or percentage, deposits and contract length.
- Coverage beyond South Africa, for companies hiring in several countries.
Prices come from each provider’s own pricing page, checked on 20 October 2026. Dollar fees are converted at R16.40 to the US dollar, roughly the mid-October 2026 rate. Country-specific quotes can differ from list prices, so treat these figures as starting points.
What each EOR costs on a R40,000 salary
On a R40,000 monthly salary, the EOR fee ranges from R4,000 with Veridian Global to about R9,800 with Remote or Deel. Over a year, that’s a difference of almost R70,000 per employee.
We used R40,000 a month as an example of a mid-level professional salary. Salary and statutory costs are excluded, since you pay those whichever provider you use.
| Provider | Pricing model | Fee per month (R) | Fee as % of salary | Fee per year (R) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Veridian Global | 10% of salary, falling to 8% with volume | 4,000 | 10% | 48,000 |
| Playroll | From $399 flat | 6,544 | 16% | 78,528 |
| Multiplier | From $459 flat (annual contract) | 7,528 | 19% | 90,336 |
| Remote | From $599 flat | 9,824 | 25% | 117,888 |
| Deel | From $599 flat | 9,824 | 25% | 117,888 |
Dollar prices converted at R16.40. Playroll lists R7,629 a month for clients billed in rand.
Where a flat fee starts to win: divide the flat fee in rand by 10% to find the salary where both models cost the same. For $599 (R9,824), that’s about R98,000 a month. For Playroll’s $399 it’s about R65,000, and for Multiplier’s $459 about R75,000.
Below those salaries, which covers most South African roles, a percentage fee is cheaper. Above them, a flat fee costs less, so senior hires deserve a separate comparison.
1. Veridian Global
Veridian Global is the best EOR for UK and European businesses hiring only in South Africa, because its fee follows South African salaries instead of a fixed dollar price.
- Pricing: 10% of gross salary for 1 to 5 placements, then 9%, 8.5% and 8% as the team grows. Cross a tier and the lower rate applies to the whole team. No placement fees and one monthly invoice (pricing).
- Local presence: based in Century City, Cape Town, with more than 20 years’ experience in South African HR, payroll and labour law.
- Track record: has helped UK organisations move 42 functions to South Africa, which grew into 189 employees.
- Beyond EOR: recruitment is in-house, so you can source and employ through one partner.
- Watch out for: it covers South Africa only. Salary and statutory costs are billed separately, and above about R98,000 a month a flat fee can work out cheaper.
Best for: SMEs and scale-ups building a team in South Africa, especially in sales, marketing, engineering and HR roles.
2. Remote
Remote is the strongest global platform for South Africa, because it owns its own legal entity here and handles support in-house rather than through local partners.
- Pricing: from $599 per employee per month, about R9,824 (pricing). Startups at pre-seed to Series A get 15% off for their first 12 months.
- Local presence: its own South African entity, with local specialists in-house.
- Coverage: EOR in more than 90 countries on one platform.
- Watch out for: its South African benefits package includes a mandatory provident fund with a 5% employer contribution. On a R40,000 salary that adds R2,000 a month, and employees can’t opt out.
Best for: venture-backed companies hiring across several countries that want owned entities rather than partners.
3. Deel
Deel is the best choice when South Africa is one of many hiring countries and you want employees, contractors, payroll and HR tools on a single platform.
- Pricing: from $599 per EOR employee per month, about R9,824, billed month to month with no long-term commitment (pricing).
- Coverage: EOR in more than 130 countries and over 40,000 customers.
- South African proof: a published case study with Puma South Africa.
- Watch out for: you pay the same as Remote for a much wider toolset. If you only hire in South Africa, most of it goes unused.
Best for: companies managing a mixed global workforce of employees and contractors.
4. Playroll
Playroll has the lowest flat fee of the global platforms in this list, plus a real South African footprint with offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
- Pricing: from $399 per employee per month, about R6,544, with no minimum commitment (pricing). Clients billed in rand see a list price of R7,629, so check your invoicing currency.
- Support: every client gets a dedicated Customer Success Manager, and every employee an Employee Success Manager, at no extra cost.
- Coverage: EOR in more than 180 countries.
- Watch out for: a fully refundable security deposit equal to one month’s salary per employee. On a R40,000 hire, that’s R40,000 of cash tied up from day one.
Best for: cost-conscious companies hiring in South Africa and a handful of other countries.
5. Multiplier
Multiplier is a capable global EOR that rewards annual contracts and suits companies whose hires may also need visas.
- Pricing: from $459 per employee per month on an annual contract, about R7,528, or $499 on a monthly contract, about R8,184 (pricing).
- Coverage: hiring in more than 160 countries, with immigration support in over 140.
- Watch out for: roughly 11% of its countries carry adjusted pricing, and implementation fees and compliance-mandated add-ons apply “as applicable”. Ask for an all-in South African quote before you sign.
Best for: multi-country teams happy to commit for 12 months in exchange for a lower monthly rate.
Statutory costs you pay with any EOR
Whichever provider you choose, South Africa’s employer contributions sit on top of the EOR fee. On a R40,000 salary they come to about R577 a month.
- UIF: the employer pays 1% of remuneration and the employee another 1%, on earnings up to R17,712 a month. That caps the employer’s share at R177.12 per employee (SARS: Unemployment Insurance Fund).
- SDL: 1% of total salaries once an employer expects to pay more than R500,000 in the next 12 months, which applies to any EOR. On R40,000 that’s R400 (SARS: Skills Development Levy).
- COIDA: an annual workplace-injury assessment paid to the Compensation Fund, with a rate set by industry risk.
Voluntary benefits such as medical aid or a retirement fund are extra. If you also want a local accountant or labour lawyer on call, you can compare firms in FindMy’s business and professional services listings.
Our Verdict
For a business hiring only in South Africa, we’d choose Veridian Global. On typical South African salaries its fee is less than half of what Remote or Deel charge, and your account sits with a Cape Town team that works only on South Africa.
The picture changes once you hire in several countries. Paying more for Remote or Deel then buys you one platform, one contract and owned or established entities across your hiring map. Playroll is the value pick among the global platforms if you can fund the deposit, and Multiplier makes sense if you’re comfortable signing for a year.
A simple rule of thumb: below about R65,000 a month, start with a percentage-based local EOR. Between R65,000 and R98,000, Playroll and Multiplier start to compete. Above about R98,000, compare every flat fee line by line.
